ENTERPRISING STUDENTS TO RECEIVE AWARDS

Students at the University of Aberdeen will have their developing business acumen recognised at an Awards Dinner tomorrow (20 May) at the Central Refectory, University of Aberdeen.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate students taking part in the University’s Entrepreneurship Programme were asked to identify either a Business Opportunity or develop a Business Plan. There are 8 categories of Award, all of which have been sponsored by a local company or by Scottish Enterprise and the winners are listed below.

UNDERGRADUATE

Best Business Opportunity (Enterprise Creation 1), CHAP Construction Trophy

Winners: Brendan Gallacher, Susan Gill, Melanie Hudson, Dimitrios Tsagalis (Medix group)

Best Business Plan (Enterprise Creation 2)., Scottish Enterprise

Winners: Louise Lawrie, Alice Matheson, Debbie Mirner, Emma Mitchell, Claire Skiner (Uniprint group)

Best Individual (Enterprise Creation 1), Scottish Enterprise

Winner: Lilian Anderson

Best Individual (Enterprise Creation 2), Scottish Enterprise

POSTGRADUATE

Best Business Opportunity (Enterprise Creation 1), Scottish Enterprise Trophy

Best Business Plan (Enterprise Creation 2), Scottish Enterprise

The awards will be presented by Alasdair Craigie, Managing Director of CHAP Construction in front of an audience of sponsors and invited guests from the local business community.

The projects submitted by the winning groups were as follows:-

* Both postgraduate groups looked at an introduction agency to serve the social needs of single people in Scotland. Project Title - Connect 2

* The undergraduate group working on an business opportunity focused on a customer based sales and distribution centre for drugs and medical supplies. Project Title - Medix

* The business plan developed by the undergraduate group looked at the supply of a variety of sportswear, printed or embroidered, to numerous clubs and societies (within the University) with a quality service. Project Title - Uniprint

Commenting on the Awards, Director of the Centre of Entrepreneurship, Professor Richard Harrison, said “Having just joined the Centre, I have been impressed by the enthusiasm and ability demonstrated by all our students and it will be particularly satisfying to see their hard work and dedication recognised.

“In designing our course, we have followed the highly successful teaching method of Babson College in the USA which is now the top rated Business School in America. Teaching is highly interactive, using a portfolio of Scottish and international entrepreneurial case studies. We also call upon the expertise of local entrepreneurs who add an invaluable dimension to our teaching activities”
