Two of Aberdeen’s brightest young scientists will attend the Government’s first national showcase of the best of British science, engineering and technology in London on Monday (March 15).
Dr Cathy Jones and Ana Deletic of the University of Aberdeen will join 300 other young scientists from throughout the UK at the reception in the House of Commons. There, they will present posters of their research to around 50 MPs, invited guests and other young scientists.
Both women were nominated to attend the event by the Professor Dominic Houlihan, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and had to send abstracts of their research to the organisers before being chosen to take part.
Dr Jones (34), is a BBSRC Fellow and lecturer in the Department of Zoology. A graduate of the Universities of Nottingham and University College London, her research focuses on understanding the genetic basis of disease resistance, with the aim of producing environmentally friendly approaches to reduce the impact of parasites on both man and agriculture.
Dr Deletic (33), is a lecturer in environmental engineering. Born in Belgrade, Serbia, and a graduate of the University of Belgrade, she joined Aberdeen University just over three years ago. The research she will be presenting looks at how grass protects the environment from polluted run offs produced by rainwater.
SET for Britain is the first national showcase of the best of British science, engineering and technology by younger researchers from university, industrial and government laboratories. The event is intended to be a major contribution and novel initiative by Britain’s younger researchers to set99 – the sixth National Week of Science, Engineering and Technology.
