World expert in property economics and finance appointed by Aberdeen University

The University of Aberdeen has appointed Professor Patric Hendershott, an internationally renowned expert in the field of property economics and finance and one of the two most published real estate authors in the world.

Professor Hendershott is currently Professor of Finance and Public Policy and holder of the John W Galbreath Chair in Real Estate at Ohio State University.

His appointment as Professor of Property Economics and Finance to the University’s Department of Land Economy will build on its reputation of excellence in these areas. The 1996 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) awarded the Land Economy Department at Aberdeen a 4A rating, the highest of any such department in the UK. The area of property research within the Department, however, was identified as of 5 quality, highlighting the international status the university holds in this area.

Originally from Minnesota, Professor Hendershott was awarded a PhD in Economics from Purdue University, Indiana, where he also taught economics and finance between 1969 and 1982. He has acted as a consultant for a number of major international companies, including serving as part-time Director, Housing and Real Estate Finance Research at Price Waterhouse between 1994 and 1997.

Professor Hendershott has co-edited two leading property journals, Real Estate Economics, 1988-91, and the Journal of Property, 1995-present, and currently serves on five journal editorial boards. He has served on three different Academic Boards of Directors, the American Finance Association, the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, and the National Tax Association.

He is a Research Associate of National Bureau of Economic Research, an Academic Fellow of the Urban Land Institute, Faculty Member at the Homer Hoyt Advanced Studies Institute, and a Member of Fannie Mae’s Office of Housing Policy Research Advisory Board. In 1992, he was awarded the George Bloom Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Real Estate, American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association.

In addition to being the most published real estate academic, Professor Hendershott has the added distinction of being among the top 20 published economists in the world, and the third most published author in financial economics.

Bryan MacGregor, MacRobert Professor of Land Economy and Director of the Centre for Property Research, said the University was delighted to have attracted someone of Professor Hendershott’s calibre.

“One of the department’s main strengths lies in the area of property economics and finance, as shown by the grading we received in the 1996 RAE. Pat Hendershott is an international leader in this subject and we are delighted to be able to attract someone of his stature.

“As well as teaching and conducting research at the University, Pat will use his networks to build the University’s already high profile in the area of property and finance. We also want him to play an important role in a collaborative venture in which we will be involved in with the universities of Reading, Glasgow and Ulster, which are the top property schools in the UK.”
