University receives £1.7 million to support unemployed students

The European Social Fund has awarded the University of Aberdeen £1.7million to support postgraduate training for students who have experienced periods of unemployment.

Eleven successful projects at the University, incorporating 33 postgraduate courses and directly benefiting 205 students who would otherwise find such training difficult or impossible, secured a total of £1,778,538 from the Fund.

The aim of the Fund is to combat unemployment, encourage occupational integration and help those at risk of exclusion from the job market into employment. A variety of vocational postgraduate programmes are supported, in particular those relating to areas where there are known to be skill shortages or under-representation of gender.

All applicants to the European Social Fund must be unemployed at the start of the training programme. Priority is given to the long-term unemployed, people with care responsibilities and others who are potentially at a disadvantage in the job market.

Anyone who is interested in applying for a place on the training programme should contact Jennifer Hartley, European Social Fund Officer, either by writing to Mrs Hartley at the European Student Office, Academic Section, Room 003, Regent Walk, Aberdeen, AB24 3FX, or on (01224) 272140/2878.
