University to unveil new engineering courses at Offshore Europe Schools Day

Friday 10 September is going to be a busy day for staff on the University of Aberdeen Offshore Europe Stand as they describe to eager potential university entrants the 47 Engineering course options they have on offer, many of which are new or restructured.

Department Head, Professor Jim Penman explained,: "We have a tremendous range of new programmes which have been designed to meet the needs of the oil and gas sector. We are particularly excited by the introduction of the MEng with Diploma in Management Studies.

"Employers are looking for more than technical skills and knowledge: they want talented, well-educated graduates who can bring managerial expertise to their role."

All Engineering degrees at the University of Aberdeen are accredited by all the major professional institutions and cover Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as Civil and Structural Engineering.

"The major plus of studying Engineering at the University of Aberdeen is that all these disciplines are taught in a single unified department." Explains Student Recruitment Services Director, Lori Manders. "This makes us unique in Scotland and offers distinct advantages to students and their eventual employers since they benefit from all-round basic introduction to all aspects of the discipline before deciding on their specialist route. Many of the students also have industrial placement projects and some of these actually take place abroad.

Mrs Manders added: "97% of our engineering graduates find jobs within 6 months and their average starting salary is in the region of £16-23,000 which is above the national average. It is quite clear from the feedback we get from employers that these courses are highly regarded around the world."

PHOTOCALL: Pupils from St Machar Academy will be visiting the stand at 11.30am on Friday 10 September. You are invited to send a photographer / reporter.
