The wonderful world of science and engineering on display
at TechFest ’99 – Beach Ballroom, 20-26 September 1999
Muscular mammals, invincible insects, electronic noses and Buckyballs are only a few of the many fascinating subjects which are going to be on show at the University of Aberdeen’s stand at TechFest ’99 at the Beach Ballroom!
Researchers from several departments within the University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering will be showing children and their parents the enormous range of work in which they are involved.
Head of the Faculty, Professor Dominic Houlihan said: “We are trying to show the children who visit TechFest that Science and Engineering are exciting subjects, all about finding things out, doing things and making things. They are not simply theoretical issues but have a real impact on our lives in so many ways.
“Many of the people who come along are potential students of the future and we want to prove to them how stimulating and relevant Science and Engineering can be. All the exhibits are hands-on so that we have as much participation from visitors as possible.”

Plants R Us: Use the latest CD-rom technology to explore the world of plants and soils beneath our feet
How Cool are You? Have your picture taken according to the heat radiating from your body. You may never look the same again.
Who Nose? We Nose! Discover the amazing world of smells with the electronic nose which can identify the smallest molecular of odour. How does your nose compare?
The Age of the Molecule Making new molecules is both an art and a science: knowledge, insight, practical skills and imagination are all required by chemist. Some exciting new molecules including liquid crystal will be demonstrated.
