A leading authority in the food industry, Lord Haskins, will deliver the fourth Raeburn Lecture at the University of Aberdeen next week.
His lecture, Regulating the Food Industry, will examine the issues facing a modern government in deciding when, or when not, to intervene in regulating the food chain. It will take place on Wednesday, October 20, at 7.30pm in the MacRobert Lecture Theatre, on the ground floor of the MacRobert Building, King Street.
Lord Haskins is Chairman of both Northern Foods plc, Britain’s most broadly based fresh food manufacturer, and Express Dairies.
Born in Dublin, Christopher Haskins, the son of a farmer, grew up in Co. Wicklow, graduating in history from Trinity College Dublin. He owns 800 arable acres in East Yorkshire, managed by his eldest son, with another son farming in County Wicklow.
He has advised both Irish and UK governments on agricultural, economic and environmental policy options. As a member of the Culliton Committee in 1991, its recommendation to the Irish government on the importance of a Social Partnership has been endorsed with great success by all succeeding Irish governments.
In 1995, he was an adviser to the Conservative government on C.A.P Reform and for four years from 1994 was a member of the UK government’s Round Table on Sustainable Development. He was also a member of the Hampel Committee, set up in 1996 by the London Stock Exchange to advise on Corporate Governance.
Lord Haskins is currently Chairman of the Labour Government’s Better Regulation Task Force, based in the Cabinet Office. He is also a member of the government’s New Deal Task Force, a member of the Board of the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Development Agency, and a member of the CBI’s President’s Committee. He is a Trustee of DEMOS, the Civil Liberties Trust and the Legal Assistance Trust.
