University Music will provide music lovers a special lunchtime treat with free recitals at various locations throughout the city during February and March as part of University Music’s outreach programme. Collections taken at the concerts will benefit Roxburghe House, a specialist palliative care unit offering support for patients and their families both in hospital and at home.
Talented students from the University of Aberdeen’s Music Department (University Music) and the North East Scotland Music School (NESMS) will offer the city of Aberdeen an unique opportunity to hear their recitals at times that easily fit into the lunch hour. All recitals will be at 1:10 pm and will last approximately one half hour.
On Tuesday, February 15th, the Pemberley Trio will perform at St. Nicholas East Church. The Pemberley Trio consists of three students from the University of Aberdeen: Rowan Walmsley on cello, Carol Ripley on violin, and Tim Tricker on piano.
On Tuesday, February 22nd, a wind quintet of students from North East of Scotland Music School (NESMS) will perform at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Huntly Street.
On Tuesday, February 29th also at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Huntly Street, Rachel Linde (cello) and Erin Smith (violin), two outstanding students from NESMS, will play, accompanied by Robert Howie. This will be a chance to hear young talent from Aberdeen’s music school. NESMS was established 25 years ago as a music school responsible for providing supplementary music tuition of international excellence.
The Elphinstone Fiddlers, from University Music, will perform Scottish traditional music at Queen’s Cross Church on Tuesday, March 7th. The Elphinstone Fiddlers were formed 2 years ago as a joint venture of the Elphinstone Institute and University Music under the direction of Douglas Haston.
There will be a recital of choral music from The Choral Scholars of King’s College Chapel Choir on Tuesday, March 14th at King’s College Chapel in Old Aberdeen.
This season’s programme will conclude on Tuesday, March 21st at St. Machar’s Cathedral with Cantores ad Portam, performing Renaissance music on recorders and other early wind instruments under the direction of Dr. David Smith, Assistant Director of University Music.
Lunchtime recitals will resume on the 18th of April in St. Mary’s in Carden Place with a duo organ recital by Dr. Roger Williams, Director of University Music, and Dr. David Smith, Assistant Director of University Music.
