Third-year PhD student, Nigel Brockton, scored a notable success in Les Arcs this week when he came in 14th out of 65 international competitors in the Speed Skiing World Championships. He was also the leading UK competitor in the race.
Nigel’s chances of performing well in the Championships had taken a knock earlier this year when he had to undergo a knee operation. Despite that and the fact that he twisted his knee two days before the Competition began, he is delighted with his performance.
Nigel is used to overcoming setbacks. Having twice suffered from cancer, the 29-year-old student has fought his way back to fitness. He held the British Record as top speed skier for four years and achieved the World Record for 24-hours skiing on an artificial slope in 1994.
Nigel’s PhD is in the field of colon cancer and he is a keen fund-raiser for cancer charities.
He is due to return to France in mid –April to compete in the Swiss Cup.
