Chemistry At Work

Gordon Shanks, Director of SATRO North Scotland said: “This event provides an opportunity for pupils following chemistry courses to experience real applications of the subject in the world beyond school. It is hoped that this stimulus will provide encouragement to continue with chemistry, developing able young scientists who are a key part of our nation’s future.”

Demonstrations will include those from Grampian Fire Brigade about fighting fires, Grampian Police showing how chemistry is used in fingerprinting, glowing beverages, liquids and powders from Robert Gordon University, glassblowing and liquid nitrogen from the University of Aberdeen, fire extinguishers and experiments from GlaxoWellcome, chemistry in the oil industry from BP-Amoco, Nalco/Exxon Energy Chemicals, and TR Oil Services Ltd, reducing the damage of oil spills from Briggs Marine Environmental Services Ltd., “model diets” from the Rowett Research Institute, and a presentation by Spencer Coatings Ltd. on pigment dispersion in surface coatings.
