Record-Breaking Careers Fair - 1st November

Record-Breaking Careers Fair - 1st November

This year’s Careers Fair will be attended by a record breaking 52 employers from across the UK. The event takes place on November 1 2000 from 10.30 to 15.30 in Elphinstone Hall, King’s College, with a special attempt being made this year to represent a real cross-section of vocational sectors.

Employers representing the financial, oil, public, voluntary and engineering sectors, as well as science, environmental, law, and IT companies will be available at this year’s Fair.

Not only that, recruiters will be on hand and there will be opportunities for students wishing to change career direction or to further specialise in their degree subject. Aberdeen University, the Robert Gordon’s University and Northern College will be providing details of their postgraduate courses including Teaching and Social Work. Students can also learn about Basil Paterson College’s increasingly popular Teaching English Abroad certificate.

Employers which will appeal particularly to arts graduates will be represented by the Careers Fair sponsor The Press and Journal, a range of employers from the Public Sector (including the Civil Service and Grampian Police), employers from the retail sector and the museum service of Aberdeenshire Council.

Pure scientists or those with an interest in the environment will have the opportunity to meet representatives from employers such as the North of Scotland Water Board, Scottish Natural Heritage, Inveresk Research International Ltd, and Wood Mackenzie Global Consultants.

Two English Law Firms will be attending for the first time, giving information to law and non-law students about Legal Traineeships in England.

The Financial Sector will remain well represented with both large and medium sized Accountancy Firms attending: Arthur Andersen, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Reeves & Neylan. Two of the professional accounting bodies will also be attending: CIMA and ICAS.

The Banks and Building Societies will be represented by the Bank of Scotland, Scottish Amicable Life Plc, Standard Life Assurance Co. and Standard Life Investments Ltd.

Baker Hughes Inteq, Esso & ExxonMobil Group of Companies, Halliburton, Shell International and Texaco will provide information on graduate recruitment within the oil industry and related services. The booming IT sector will be represented by Electronic Data Systems Ltd, Logica. and Agilent Technologies.

Representatives from the Public Sector include the Armed Forces, The Health and Safety Executive, The Government Statistical Service and Aberdeen City Council Social Work Department. For those interested in the Voluntary Sector and Overseas Work, a number of organisations will be attending including Aberdeen Cyrenians, World Exchange and VSO.

Two Recruitment Agencies will also be present namely the Science Recruitment Group and the Software Academy.

Students should grasp this opportunity to meet with a diverse range of employers, many of whom recruit graduates from any discipline. By talking directly with company representatives, students will be able to evaluate not only which careers are open to them but which best fit their own personal needs. For those students who have specific plans for their future, this is an ideal chance to impress employers with an up-to-date CV.
