University Chefs come out tops

The University of Aberdeen came out tops as the only university to scoop two awards after competing against fifteen other teams from across the UK in the University Chefs’ Challenge 2000 in London. It was also the only university in Scotland to win an award, coming in third overall with the Bronze Medal.

The team comprised of Mike Seed (Production Manager), Derek Smith (Assistant Production Manager), Sandra Mulloy (Cook) and Team Manager Jackie Smith (Assistant Catering Officer) picked up the awards for ‘Overall Best Hygiene’ and ‘Kitchen Safety Practices’.

During the rest of the year, the team supports the University’s Residential and Catering Services, providing a wide range of catering needs to students and academic and commercial groups, as well as to the King’s College Conference Centre.

Ron Cunningham, Director of Residential and Catering Services said: “Our team put a lot of time and effort into the competition, and not only did they get the just rewards, they represented us proudly as a Centre of Excellence here in Aberdeen.”

Organised by The University Caterers’ Organisation (TUCO), which aims to promote quality standards in catering, the University Chefs’ Challenge has grown over the past seven years to become the Olympic standard of university catering. Previous winners have gone on to compete in Parade des Chefs and the Garde D’Or Live Competition Theatres at Hotelympia in London.
