Aberdeen a first choice for many as applications rise by 17%

The University of Aberdeen has had a 17% increase in the number of applications, out performing every other Scottish University with the exception of St Andrews.

The figures have been issued today by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS).

Lori Manders, Director of Student Recruitment Services, said she was delighted that an increasing number of students have decided that Aberdeen is the right choice for them.

“There has been a sustained effort to widen communication to prospective students. Many of our initiatives locally have obviously had an impact, particularly the roadshows. Applications from our local area have risen by 18%. Applications from the rest of Scotland are up 15% and the rest of the UK 16%. Applications from elsewhere in the EU are also up,” she said.

“We saw an increase in applications for 2000 entry and a significant increase in our intake in September 2000. We have continued to build on that success and today’s figures confirm that we are one of the first choice universities for many prospective students. We are also bucking the national trend with a 17% increase in science applications.”

The University of Aberdeen is one of Scotland’s top institutions. It has a superb reputation and its wide choice of programmes and flexible entry has proven to be attractive. The university’s success in placing 97% of graduate in to work or further study within 6 months of graduating highlights the demand in the market place for its graduates.

Courses in Finance, Engineering, Sports Studies, Computing, Film Studies, Law and Animal sciences have proved particularly popular this year.

The University is looking forward to welcoming applicants at its Applicants’ Open Days on Wednesday, February 28, and Wednesday, March 7. Anyone interested in attending should contact Student Recruitment Services on (01224) 272090.
