Securing the future for Northern Ireland

The Rt. Hon Adam Ingram MP, Minister for State for Northern Ireland, will deliver the fourth in a series of prestigious lectures at the University of Aberdeen this week.

“The Good Friday Agreement gave paramilitaries the chance to make the transition to a peaceful society and many have done so,” said Mr Ingram.

“But there remain others from whom criminality has become a profitable way of life. They are the dark side of Northern Ireland – the poisonous product of the last 30 years. Overcoming them is the next great challenge both for Government and for the people of Northern Ireland,” Mr Ingram added.

His lecture is the final of four lectures in the Across the Water: Reflections on Scotland and Ireland lecture series, which has been organised by the University’s Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies. It will take place at the King’s College Lecture Theatre KCG7 on Thursday 3 May, at 7.00 pm.

The first lecture in the Across the Water series was given by Canon Kenyon Wright, former Chair of the Scottish Constitutional Convention, last November. Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney delivered the second lecture in February. Last month Irish Diplomat, Daniel Mulhall, Consul General of Ireland in Scotland, delivered the third lecture.

Lord Sewel, Vice-Principal, University of Aberdeen, will chair the event. Free tickets for the lecture are available from the University Press Office on (01224) 272097, or by e-mailing pubrel@abdn.ac.uk
