SNP MEP to explore the ‘European question’

One of Scotland’s most distinguished academic lawyers, Professor Neil MacCormick MEP, FRSE, FBA, will deliver the fifth annual Ledingham Chalmers European Law Lecture at the University of Aberdeen on Thursday, May 10.

Professor MacCormick, Regius Professor of Public Law at the University of Edinburgh, will talk on his experience as an MEP and the constitutional theory of the European Union in his lecture, Can Europe be Democratic?

The lecture, which has been organised by the University’s School of Law, will take place at King’s College Conference Centre at 6.30pm. Admission is free and it will be followed by a reception.

Professor MacCormick has published extensively on the legal theory of the European Union. He joined the SNP in 1967, has held office in the party at local and national level, and has been a Westminster candidate. In September 1999, he was elected a Vice-President of the SNP.

In June 1999, he was elected to the European Parliament and now sits as one of the two SNP members for Scotland. He is Co-ordinator for the Green/European Free Alliance Group on the Parliament’s Committee of Legal Affairs and the Internal Market. He also sits on the Constitutional Affairs Committee.

Ledingham Chalmers is the Scottish law firm with offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness and overseas offices in Baku (Azerbaijan), Istanbul (Turkey) and Stanley (Falkland Islands). Professor MacCormick's lecture is the fifth in an annual series sponsored by Ledingham Chalmers.
