Chemist wins Kroll Medal

Professor Fredrick Glasser BA(Conn), PhD(Penn), DSc(Aberd), FIM, FRSE, of the Department of Chemistry, will be awarded the prestigious Kroll Medal today from the Institute of Materials, in recognition of his significant contributions "which have enhanced the scientific understanding of materials chemistry as applied to the industrial production of materials."

Professor Glasser has produced over 400 publications showing his broad scope of interest and contribution to the cement and material sciences over a period of 45 years, and he is still active in developing new and improved cementatious materials.

The Institute of Materials makes a number of awards each year for achievement in the field of materials science and engineering, including the Kroll Medal.

The Institute of Materials (IoM) is the professional body of the materials science and engineering community. It serves the international materials community through its wide range of learned society activities and by acting as the professional body for materials scientists and engineers. With a membership of over 18,000 individuals throughout the UK and Europe, the Institute represents a formidable range of expertise across the disciplines of ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites.

The medal will be presented during the international Cement and Concrete Science Conference

held under the auspices of the Institute of Materials at the University of Aberdeen on August 30-31.

Prof Glasser was for many years a member of Grampian Region Childrens' Panel and served for several years as its chairman.
