Taking the Test

Taking the Test

The University of Aberdeen at Offshore Europe - Stand 508, Red Zone

(Photo/Interview Opportunity: Tuesday, September 4, at 10.00am. Details at the end of this release)

Scientists at Aberdeen who have developed Scotland’s first research centre for testing offshore materials will be discussing their work at Offshore Europe on Tuesday, September 4 at 10.00am. Dr Robin Henderson of Aberdeen’s Scottish Offshore Materials Centre will talk about what happens when materials don’t stand up to the high pressures and temperatures of hostile offshore environments, and the huge impact these results can have on the oil production.

The Scottish Offshore Materials Centre – a new state-of-the-art centre that can replicate extreme offshore environments to test materials and instrumentation, brings the expertise of engineers and chemists to bear on problems encountered by the oil industry.

The focal point of the centre is a High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) facility based at the University of Aberdeen’s Department of Engineering. It will allow the testing of industrial materials, including sealing elements, components of downhole tools and reservoir-scale rock samples at temperatures up to 250 degrees and pressures of 2,000 atmospheres.

An advanced thermal analysis based in the University’s Department of Chemistry will allow the scientists to examine changes in the chemistry of components as a result of exposure to aggressive oil well fluids at high pressures and temperatures, and determine whether or not the chemistry has been damaged.

The Scottish Offshore Materials Centre is aimed at the oil and gas, petro-chemical, chemicals, and energy sectors but is also available to other industries, including pharmaceuticals, food and drink and polymer production.

Other events taking place on Stand 508, University of Aberdeen, throughout the day include:

10.30am In Good Company

The Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) and LINK scheme have revolutionised many businesses across the country by allowing them access to university expertise and graduates. TCS-Link Manager, Robin Brown and his staff will answer questions throughout the day on how your organisation could benefit from the Government-backed initiative.

2.00-6.00pm Technology Foresight

Leading Aberdeen experts in engineering, chemistry, and geology pick up the day’s technology theme. Find out about our award-winning round anchorage system – GRANIT. Discover that extra dimension with hologram technology, and hear from our geologists about their latest industry-backed research.

Commercial Advantage

Our commercialisation team will be on hand to discuss different approaches from our consultancy service through to licensing of our technology.
