Susan Rice to be guest speaker at annual University of Aberdeen Ladies' Luncheon

Over 300 women from throughout the North East of Scotland will attend this year’s University of Aberdeen’s Ladies Luncheon to be held at The Marcliffe at Pitfodels on Thursday September 6, 2001.

Guest speaker at the annual fundraiser this year is Susan Rice, who became the first female Chief Executive of any bank in Britain when she took up the post with Lloyds TSB in Edinburgh in September 2000. Mrs Rice joins a cast of illustrious previous speakers: Lady Clare Macdonald (1995), Liz Lochhead (1996), Iain Cuthbertson (1997), Lady Howe (1998), University Rector, Clarissa Dickson Wright (1999), and Fiona Kennedy (2000).

Mrs Rice’s previous banking experience had been with NatWest in New York and the Bank of Scotland where she was Managing Director of Personal Banking. She is a graduate of Wellesley College, Massachusetts and the University of Aberdeen (MLitt 1970). Mrs Rice is married to the Principal of the University of Aberdeen, and they have three children. She successfully combines a busy working life in Edinburgh with a home life in Aberdeen.

Introduced in the University’s Quincentenary year, proceeds from the event go towards the Student Hardship Fund, with a particular emphasis on international students. So far, the Fund has been able to help students from Ireland, Bangladesh, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Ghana and Jordan.
