Clarissa stands again for Rector of Aberdeen

Clarissa Dickson Wright, Rector for the University of Aberdeen, is to stand again for the post against an old rival, Major Richard Eccles, it has been announced this afternoon (Thursday, ).

Celebrity cook Clarissa made history in 1998, when she became the first woman Rector at Aberdeen in more than 500 years. It is also believed to be the first time an Aberdeen Rector has stood for a second term.

Major Richard Eccles, a retired army major and who also took part in the 1998 election, was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1990.

Clarissa, who has taken a high-profile approach to the job, has brought the fun and challenging times of her term of office to readers of her Scotland on Sunday column.

The Rector, an ancient post dating back to the foundation of the University in 1495, has been, since 1860, the students’ representative on the University Court. Rectors serve for three years and appoint to the Court a Rector’s Assessor; student’s interests are further served on the Court ex-officio by the President of the Students’ Association.

Voting for the Rectorship, open to all matriculated students of the University, will take place on Thursday, November 15.
