Land Economy launches new degree programmes

The Department of Land Economy at the University of Aberdeen has launched an exciting range of new MA programmes designed to prepare graduates to meet the many management challenges facing urban, rural and coastal environments in the 21st Century.

Building on the Department’s reputation as the leading research department of its kind in Scotland and among the very best in the United Kingdom (as recognised in the UK-wide 2001 Research Assessment Exercise), it is now at the forefront of curriculum design.

Land Economy’s long-standing links with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Town Planning Institute professions are maintained and strengthened through their recognition (accreditation) of several of these programmes for graduate entry into their professions.

Professor David Adams, Head of the Department of Land Economy at the University, said: “These new MA programmes will reinforce the University of Aberdeen’s reputation as a leading international centre in property, planning and resource management. They will be delivered through practically-based and creative approaches to teaching.”

Employment prospects in these areas are excellent, as the following quotes from potential employers confirm:

MA Property

"The Department of Land Economy's recognition of property's interrelationship with other financial and economic disciplines confirms their status as leaders in the teaching of property degree courses. This innovative move reflects employers requirements for property graduates with good financial skills and macro economic knowledge." (Mr Neil Miller, Director-Agency Chesterton).

MA Rural Land and Business Management

“As Chairman of the Rural Faculty of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Scotland, and a graduate of Land Economy at Aberdeen University, I was delighted to hear of the MA in Rural Land and Business Management. As a profession, Chartered Surveyors are involved in an ever-increasing diversity of property and environmental issues. Accordingly, I welcome the fact that this has been recognised by such an important source of young professionals, providing them with a relevant, focused, and practical basis upon which to build their career.” (Mr Calum Innes, BLE, MRICS, CKD Findlayson and Hughes).

MA Environmental Planning and MA Planning and Development

“The Aberdeen University courses afford real opportunities to combine an awareness of the breadth of spatial planning and the development of particular areas of expertise. These are useful in pursuing a wide range of planning-related careers.” (Mr Kevin Murray, Past President of the RTPI and Director of Consultancy, EDAW).

The new programmes, which commence in September 2002, include:

- MA in Coastal Management

- MA in Environmental Planning

- MA in Planning and Development

- MA in Property (single honours or joint honours with Accountancy, Economics, Finance or Management)

- MA in Rural Land and Business Management

- MA in Sustainable Development
