University for Children and Communities supporting Gordon Primary School
The University for Children and Communities (UCC) at the Faculty of Education, University of Aberdeen, is to support primary 6 and 7 pupils from Gordon Primary School, Huntly to participate in activities that will encourage them to participate in Further and Higher Education in the future.
The University for Children and Communities is a project funded by SHEFC whose aim is to widen access to further and higher education in designated target areas of Aberdeen and through two linked programmes - one for children and one for the wider community. The UCC is currently active in Northfield, Torry, Kincorth, Huntly and Laurencekirk. The project works in partnership with local universities, further education colleges, local authorities and other agencies to challenge a culture of underachievement in the target communities and develop supportive environments to promote lifelong learning.
Pupils from Gordon Primary School will, this week, visit the Bennachie Centre and learn about the work of the rangers. Also, as part of the programme, farm visits and a school garden landscape project in partnership with staff from the Scottish Agricultural College will take place. The week aims to provide the children with an interesting and enjoyable experience as well as inform then about how Further and Higher Education can enable them to progress to a variety of careers. The week will also encourage pupils to learn about their own immediate environment with visits to Huntly Castle, Huntly Business Centre and Huntly Library.
Commenting on the event Ms Eggeling, Acting Registrar, UCC, said: "Hopefully the pupils will see or do something this week that inspires them to be positive about going to college or university in the future"
