Young Scots mathematicians to receive Gold Awards

Secondary school pupils from throughout the North and Highlands of Scotland will gather today (Monday June 10) at the University of Aberdeen for the annual prizegiving of the Scottish Mathematical Challenge.

Over 70 secondary pupils and their parents are expected to spend the day at the Mathematical Sciences Department at the University of Aberdeen before being presented with Gold and Silver Awards after competing in the Scottish Mathematical Challenge. The Challenge is the brainchild of the Scottish Mathematical Council who set school pupils across Scotland a series of mathematical tasks. The aim of the annual competition is to promote mathematics as a source of interest and pleasurable achievement.

Dr Colin Maclachlan, Reader in Mathematics at the University of Aberdeen and local Challenge organiser said: "The Mathematical Challenge was introduced here at the University of Aberdeen in 1976 and is going from strength to strength. We are delighted with the response from schools in our area. This year's Prizewinners include pupils from as far afield as Orkney and the Western Isles."
