Over 3000 expected at University of Aberdeen's Open Day

The University of Aberdeen will be holding its third University-wide pre-application Open Day on Tuesday, August 27, following on from the success of last year's event.

Director of Marketing, Lori Manders, said: "The Open Day is an ideal opportunity for future students to visit and learn about how much the University of Aberdeen has to offer and get a taste of university life.

"We anticipate over 3,000 visitors will visit, some from as far afield as Japan and Italy. The vast majority of visitors will be 6th year pupils yet to apply for university. However, anyone with an interest in higher education is welcome and a considerable number will be parents and teachers, and prospective mature students. We will showcase how Aberdeen has reached a place in the top 20 UK universities in the 2002 Times Good University Guide."

An exciting programme has been devised, all relating to the theme, Innovation - Building on a History of Excellence. Departments will be opening their doors with tours, exhibitions and lectures. Visitors can learn more about the 600+ first degree programmes at Aberdeen and also have the opportunity to speak to lecturers. In addition, student support services will talk about clubs, societies and other support on offer to students and Student Ambassadors will show visitors around the campus.

Earlier this week, the University marked the initial construction of one of the major highlights which will be on display, the Big Brother style 'live' Diary Room. During the event, visitors will be able to enter the booth on display at King's College campus and record on film comments about the University and their experiences during the Open Day.

"The University is looking forward to having the Big Brother style 'live' Diary Room on display at the Open Day. This has all been made possible by generous sponsorship from Jarvis UPP," added Lori Manders.

Another of the highlights of the day will be an appearance by University Rector, Clarissa Dickson Wright, who will give a special presentation, Food Glorious Food, and will participate in an organic food tasting session.

The Medical Faculty at Foresterhill will have an interesting programme, including interactive demonstrations at the Clinical Skills Centre.

The University will have a special exhibit to showcase Aberdeen's breadth of environmental degree programmes, along with the University's environmental strategy, plans for sustainable development, and the wealth of natural habitat surrounding Aberdeen.
