University Provost made Chair of Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust

Health Minister, Malcolm Chisholm, has announced that Professor Stephen Logan is to be appointed as Chairman of Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust. He will take up the position on 1 November, 2002 and his appointment will be for two years.

Professor Logan (51) is Provost for the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen and is currently the University Medical School member on the Grampian NHS Board. When he takes up the Trust Chair position, Professor Logan will not hold any other Ministerial appointments.

Mr Chisholm said: "I am delighted to announce this important new appointment. Professor Logan will bring his extensive academic and health service experience to the role which will benefit the people of Grampian."

Grampian NHS Board is responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community in the Grampian region. To meet those needs it has an annual budget of over £453.5 million.

Professor Logan first became involved with Grampian health issues as a member of the Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust in 1999.

On the announcement of his new appointment, Professor Logan, said: "I am very much looking forward to taking up this new post and working with the very wide range of professions that contribute to Grampian region's health services.

"We have a very good team in place and I hope that we will be able to deliver the quality of health services required here in the North East. I am looking forward to the opportunity and challenges of developing this post and improving our ability to execute our strategies."

Mr Jim Royan, Chair of Grampian NHS Board, said: "Professor Logan's appointment as Chair of Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust brings with it a reputation of proven leadership, vision and a unique insight into the health service as a learning organisation. These attributes will contribute very significantly to the continuing development of health services and health improvement here in the communities that make up Grampian."

It is expected that Professor Logan will contribute around three days per week to his duties as Trust Chair.
