Headteachers Back to Class

Secondary school headteachers and other education leaders from the North-east of Scotland and the Highlands are being invited to attend a one and a half day conference on leadership, management and flexibility in schools. Entitled New LAMPs for Old , the event will take place at the University of Aberdeen on Thursday October 31 and Friday November 1, 2002.

In our rapidly changing world, schools can no longer rely on providing knowledge for a lifetime, but rather need to look to enable students to learn for a lifetime. This means changing the whole system of education.

The University of Aberdeen Headteachers’ Conference will examine the changing nature and structure of schools with key speakers including Ronnie Smith, General Secretary of the Educational Institute for Scotland and Myra Pearson, Depute Registrar (Education) at the General Teaching Council, addressing various issues including future teacher training needs and the roles of parents, pupils and professional associations in times of change.

Professor C Duncan Rice, Principal of the University of Aberdeen, will open the Conference at King’s College Conference Centre and offer his views on the crucial need for effective school leadership and management. Nikki Musgrave, conference organiser said: “This high level Headteachers’ Conference comes at a crucial time for Scottish education. Headteachers are increasingly being asked to lead educational change but without an effective appreciation as to what leadership and management in education actually is. This Conference aims to build on the success of a similar event held here last year and gives headteachers the opportunity not only to think in new ways about what constitutes effective leadership and management in a changing environment but also to explore the needs of stakeholders such as parents and pupils and to consider case studies of schools which have broken the mould.”

The Conference is designed for Headteachers, Directors of Education and anyone involved in the management of schools. Full details and booking forms are available from Prospect CPD, University of Aberdeen tel: 01224 272523 or website: www.cpd.abdn.ac.uk/headteachers.
