New appointment at the University of Aberdeen for one of the world's leading theologians

Professor John Webster, who occupies the Lady Margaret Chair of Divinity at Oxford University, has been appointed to the Chair of Systematic Theology at the University of Aberdeen.

Professor Webster has won international acclaim for his work on the theology of Karl Barth, the 20th century Swiss theologian often considered the most important Reformed thinker since the Reformation. He will take up his new position in August 2003.

Professor Iain Torrance, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Divinity at the University of Aberdeen, said that he would be delighted to welcome John and Jane Webster to Aberdeen, where one of their sons is a student. Commenting on the new appointment, he said: "John Webster is one of the world's leading theologians and his wife Jane is a most gifted teacher of autistic children."
