Aberdeen Students' Charities Campaign

Aberdeen Students' Charities Campaign

A total of £26,000 will be given to 47 local charities and organisations with each receiving amounts varying from £100 to £5000. Students from throughout the city have organised a variety of events, activities and collections throughout the past year with all proceeds going to charity.

Three organisations will benefit from funding of over £2,500 with the Aberdeen Branch of Children 1st set to receive £5,000. Grampian Society for the Blind will receive £3,700 toward the purchase of specialist equipment for those living in the community who are visually impaired to assist them in their own homes. The charity Archway, which provides residential care for the disabled will receive £2,500 to capitalise on a facility created following last year's Students' Charities donation. The donation of £5,000 to Aberdeen branch of Children 1st will be used to help fund Corrieneuchin Abuse Recovery Project, providing intensive counselling for children who have experienced abuse.

Dr Graeme Roberts, University of Aberdeen Vice Principal will award the individual cheques with the Lord Provost, represented by Len Ironside, Leader of Aberdeen City Council, in attendance.

Dr Roberts said: "The Charities Campaign is a wonderful chance for the city's students to work together to raise money for local causes and have enormous fun in doing so. We are really proud of what they have achieved."

Len Ironside said: "I am delighted by the amount raised. It is especially encouraging to see students giving something back to the community, particularly given the increasing constraints students face on their own time and finances."
