University of Aberdeen hosts scholars' reception

In recognition of the significant generosity and importance of scholarships to students, the University of Aberdeen is to host its first annual Scholars' Reception this evening (Monday February 10) at King's College.

Over 20 individual donors, corporate donors and representatives of Trusts and Foundations will attend the Scholarship Reception to meet with their respective student scholars.

The University has generously been gifted over £6m from companies, trusts and foundations, as well as from alumni and friends. All these funds have been given to support students. Most of the scholarships are in support of undergraduate students with some being offered in conjunction with paid work experience.

Michele Calvert, University Director of Development, said: "The Scholars' Reception is a new event for the University but one that we hope will become an important annual occasion. A great number of individuals, companies and trusts have generously gifted the University a significant amount of money for student support. We hope that tonight's event will be an opportunity for our various donors to meet the students who have benefited from their generosity."

A total of 40 individually funded scholarships are offered by companies, trusts, foundations or individuals with a further 66 scholarships available through the Entrance Bursary Scheme. The Scholarship Programme is part of the University's Sixth Century Campaign, which was launched by Principal C Duncan Rice in 1999. The Sixth Century Campaign is one of the most ambitious campaigns by any Higher Education institution outside Oxbridge and aims to raise £150m by the end of the decade.
