University serves up Scottish Words for Schools

Thousands of young readers across the North East will get the chance to read up on the best of Scottish literature thanks to the University of Aberdeen.

The Scottish Book Trust's Read Around Books collection will be distributed to schools across Aberdeen this week as part of the University's ongoing commitment to encouraging literacy and reading.

The twelve books introduce readers to acclaimed Scottish novelists, including Janice Galloway, Meaghan Delahunt, Ali Smith and Michel Faber.

These authors thrilled audiences at the University's three-day Word festival in May 2003.

Aberdeen City Council's Curriculum Resources and Information Service will distribute the books, which aim to encourage reading and act as a gateway to Scottish literature.

Alison Turriff, Principal Officer at the Curriculum Resources and Information Service said "The books will provide a good introduction to authors for pupils and staff alike, schools will be very happy to receive them".

Pupils will get another chance to find out more about Scottish Literature at the Open day on 26th August when all University departments will open their doors to prospective students, parents and teachers.
