As this year's exhibition begins, the emphasis is clearly on the need for research into new and innovative ideas for the future of the oil business.
From major research on the secrets of the deepest oceans to the latest teaching on global economics, the University of Aberdeen is at the centre of research and innovation in Europe's Energy capital.
The University has a long-established reputation as a centre of excellence in fields such as petroleum economics, engineering, safety psychology, petroleum geology, deep-sea monitoring, environmental monitoring, law and business management.
Our leading industry specialists will be on-hand at the University's stand (no. 727), throughout the week to share their expertise, provide an insight into the latest developments and to explain how they can provide solutions to boost the sustainability and competitiveness of the energy sector.
The University has exhibited at the Offshore Europe Exhibition every year since 1994. The University views the exhibition as an excellent opportunity to showcase its research, expertise and facilities. Situated at the heart of Europe's Energy capital, the University has a long-established reputation in fields such as petroleum economics, engineering, safety psychology, petroleum geology, deep sea monitoring, environmental monitoring, law and business management. The Exhibition provides academics with yet another opportunity to meet with industry specialists and to explain how they can provide solutions to their business needs.
Professor Dominic Houlihan, Vice Principal for Research and Commercialisation, said: "Our aim at this year's Exhibition is to connect with businesses who can benefit from our research excellence and to highlight that this can be delivered in a variety of ways. From contract research to consultancy, licensing and company formations, the University has a team of commercialisation experts who can assist companies to find a solution.
"The oil industry has called upon the University as a centre of research excellence since the early days of exploration in the hostile environment of the North Sea. It is also now at the centre of the push to make Aberdeen a world centre for renewable energy."
Professor Paul Mitchell, Head of the University's School of Resources, Environment and Society, is one of the directors of the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group, that promotes Aberdeen as a global energy capital and seeks to build on the extensive knowledge base that the City possesses from its work on oil and gas. Professor Mitchell is also leading work within the School of Resources, Environment and Society, on biomass and biofuels - an important part of the renewable energy agenda.
This year will also see the University featuring its spin-out companies. A dedicated commercial team, Research and Innovation, works with Aberdeen's academic community to identify commercial opportunities from their research. This results on an average of four spin-out companies a year being formed. This year's Offshore Europe will see their biotechnology companies - Haptogen, Remedios, and NCIMB - promoting their environmental solutions for the oil industry. AUPEC, the University's petroleum economics consultancy company will also join these companies, highlighting their benchmarking tools and the latest thinking in petroleum economics. Aberdeen's youngest company, Brinker, will highlight its novel solution for pipeline leakage detection and sealing.
At this year's Conference the University will also be featuring Oceanlab. Opening up the secrets of the deep is the mission of the University's subsea research centre. Led by Professor Monty Priede, Oceanlab provides one of the few facilities in the world capable of testing how equipment will perform in extreme deep-sea conditions.
