University hosts Celebratory Lunch

In celebration of the University of Aberdeen becoming an Institutional Member of the British Association a special lunch is being hosted by the two organisations tomorrow (Thursday September 18) at Elphinstone Hall, King's College campus.

The British Association (BA) is a unique nationwide organisation dedicated to the communication and appreciation of science. As an Institutional Member, the University of Aberdeen will help contribute to the wider aims of the BA by continuing to invest in the teaching and learning of young people and taking a lead in the communication of science in the North of Scotland. In so doing, the University will become part of an expanding network of organisations concerned about the interaction between science and society.

Professor Albert Rodger, Head of the College of Physical Science will speak at the celebratory lunch tomorrow and welcome the University's increasing involvement in the organisation. Professor Rodger said; "The University and the BA have strong links, formed over many years of supporting each other to enhance the profile of science in the North of Scotland. I am now delighted that the University is able to further assist the BA in Scotland and jointly promote the understanding and development of science, engineering and technology to a wider audience. By spreading knowledge and improving communication we can help support the development of an informed society."

The BA has been active in Scotland since its foundation in 1831 and is proud of its strong Scottish connections. It has held its annual Festival of Science in Scotland 24 times - in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling - and Scottish research is always well represented among Festival speakers and topics.
