An evening of song and dance

An evening of song and dance

The Greig-Duncan Celebration Ceilidh, to be held in the New Deer Public Hall, Aberdeenshire will be a celebratory evening, especially for those who value the wonderful North-East heritage of song or would like to find out more about it. And there's dancing too, with the Greig-Duncan Ceilidh Band.

North-East singers who will be participating in the event, include: Jock Duncan, Anne Reid, Geordie Murison, Gordon Easton, Robert Lovie, Stanley Robertson, Sheena Blackhall, Barbara Ann Burnett, Lindy Cheyne, Tom McKean and Katherine Campbell. The special guest is Emily Lyle (Senior Editor of the Collection).

Dr Lyle said: "The final appearance of the eight volumes of The Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection, after many years of work, certainly calls for celebration. What better place could there be for it than New Deer, the parish where James B Duncan was born and raised and where Gavin Greig spent his working life as a teacher.

"All of us who were involved with preparing the publication are aware how much the world of folk song owes to this place and to the people of Aberdeenshire in the past and present who gave their songs to the collectors and their aid and encouragement to the editors. I would like to express my own warm thanks to everyone who has helped in the preparation of the publication. The evening of song and dancing is a fitting tribute and I hope everyone will have a very enjoyable evening."

The evening is being supported by several organisations, including: TMSA (Aberdeen Branch), Buchan Heritage, the School of Scottish Studies Archives, the University of Edinburgh, and The Friends of the Elphinstone Institute.

The ceilidh will be held between 7.30 and 11.00pm and the cost per ticket is £4 (£2 concession). This is a BYOB evening.
