The University of Aberdeen is this week launching its new music programme for the forthcoming year.
Aberdeen audiences can look forward to celebrated soloists, inspired programmes and new and established talent when the Music in the University 2003/2004 new season of recitals starts on Sunday, October 12. The new season opens with the thrilling virtuosity of the Edinburgh Quartet with a rich and contrasting programme including Haydn and Quartet No 2 by Kenneth Leighton - one of the most distinguished British post-war composers. This will take place in the Picture Gallery, Mitchell Hall, Marischal College, at 7.45pm and everyone is welcome to attend. Pete Stollery also invites us to explore the fascinating world of electro-acoustic music and hear the first Aberdeen performance of his own composition Vox Magna. Discoveries 30 - Electro-acoustic music will take place on Wednesday 23 October, in Mitchell Hall, Marischal College, at 7.45pm. and admission is free.
Dr Roger Williams, Director of University Music, said: "Whether you are new to classical music or a regular concert-goer, there really is something for everyone in our season of popular and unexpected music from around the world.
"We would like people - young and old - to come and join us as we want to bring the thrill of live music to wider audiences."
This year, the new season shows that the University is an exciting place to be with music by some of the world's greatest composers, new works and international soloists performing alongside university musicians.

Among the names joining us in Aberdeen are the outstanding pianists Mikhail Kazakevich and Florian Uhlig, the violinist Ruth Waterman and the Tchaikovsky Quartet who will feature in Russian Masterpces - a 10 day festival of concerts and events in November celebrating the music and culture of Russia.
Other highlights include a visit by the Mugenkyo Japanese Drummers and a series of special recitals on the magnificent new organ at King's College Chapel, which will be inaugurated by the celebrated concert organist Dame Gillian Weir in February 2005.
