University hosts Royal Institute of Philosophy lecture series

Three distinguished philosophers will bring philosophy to a wider audience in a lecture series to be held at the University of Aberdeen, sponsored by the Royal Institute of Philosophy. Professor Le Poidevin, from the University of Leeds, will commence the series on October 9 with a lecture on the Nature of Infinity.

Professor Graham, Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen said: "There is plenty of evidence in the bookshops and on radio that the public's interest in philosophy is rising, and the Royal Institute is devoting some of its resources to capitalising on this development. It is gratifying that they think Aberdeen and its University a promising place in which to base such an initiative. What is different about this first series is that it gives people a chance to hear experts think about some of the really big metaphysical issues -- the nature of infinity for example -- that have perplexed the greatest intellects in history."

Dr Penelope Mackie, University of Birmingham will address Time and Possibility on October 30 and Professor John Lowe, University of Durham will address Ontological Categories and Categorial Schemes on November 20. The lecture series, titled Metaphysics: The Big Questions is open to the public free of charge and will be held in the Regent Walk Lecture Theatre at 5:30pm.

The Royal Institute of Philosophy, founded in 1925, aims to promote the study and discussion of philosophy and original work through its journals Philosophy and Think and by arranging and sponsoring programmes of lectures and conferences.
