Opening exhibition: Spirit of Stones

Opening exhibition: Spirit of Stones

[A photo opportunity with Annabel Carey and her batiks will be held at Marischal Museum on November 14 at 11am]

Marischal Museum at the University of Aberdeen will be the opening venue (Monday, November 17) for a UK touring exhibition of up to fifty framed batiks featuring stone circles by Annabel Carey.

The exhibition is the result of a twenty year project by artist Annabel Carey and the batiks are all of stone circles and standing stones - many on them in Scotland, including well known North-east sites such as Sunhoney, Cullerlie and Loanhead of Daviot.

Hilary Murray, Exhibition Co-ordinator said: "The title 'Spirit of Stones' really sums up the feel of this exhibition- they are very evocative of the atmosphere which surrounds many stone circles and other prehistoric sites. As an archaeologist I was prepared to be sceptical but these batiks are hauntingly beautiful - well worth seeing ".

Annabel Carey said: "I used the medium of batik as it seemed to offer me a wide range of expression to capture the essence of each monument. By exhibiting the batiks from all regions together I hope to inspire and encourage other people to visit these monuments, some over 5000 years old, and reflect on our ancient spiritual heritage."

The exhibition will be on display in Marischal Museum until 19 February 2004 and offers a tranquil retreat from Christmas shopping. The exhibition is also the basis of an illustrated book written by Ms Carey with a forward by Ronald Hutton, Professor of History at Bristol University. Limited edition prints of selected batiks are also available.
