Ambitious plans to create a new, state-of-the-art students' facility at the heart of King's College campus are to be explored by the University of Aberdeen.
The University has joined forces with the Students' Association to examine the possibility of creating a 'one-stop shop' for students which could see new social facilities come under the same roof as new Students' Association facilities, student welfare and support services, and a range of other activities.
"This is an exciting project which will bring student life back to the heart of our King's College Campus," said Senior Vice Principal Professor John Sewel. "The University will invest in new facilities to stay ahead, maintain competitiveness and offer a complete package for students."
In the interim, a project board will be created over the next few weeks to draft a blueprint of the facilities. It will comprise University and student representatives; the plans will then be open to extensive consultation with the University community, in particular, local residents.
The potential move has been welcomed by the Students' Association.
"We have been pushing for new facilities for several years, and we are delighted to be working in close partnership with the University," said Jenny Duncan, President of the Students' Association.
"There has been a dramatic change in the national marketplace over the past few years and we are taking stock of our provision to ensure that we are providing what students want. In the main, the downturn is due to financial hardship, increased competition and higher expectations of social activities. The Gallowgate Union has seen a dramatic downturn in business levels within the bar, entertainment and catering operations."
As of 8 December, the Union management have decided to open the Union only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, as this is when 80% of weekly sales are achieved. If a suitable alternative is identified, the Union will close in June 2004 and replacement facilities will be created within the grounds of King's College Campus. More. . .
Ms Duncan added: "We recognise that many alumni hold special memories of their time at the Union but the changing trends mean that we have to move with the times. The Association welcomes the continued support of the University and we are looking forward to developing these exciting new facilities for many future generations of students."
