Minister gives keynote address at University sustainability conference

Jim Wallace MSP (Deputy First Minister and Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning) will deliver the keynote address at the third annual Conference on Sustainable Development and the Oil and Gas Industry at the University of Aberdeen on Monday December 1, 2003.

Sustainable Development - the process needed to achieve a sustainable society - is now an issue of significant importance to the oil and gas industry. This one day conference brings together some of the UK's leading experts in the fields of sustainable development and the oil and gas industry and will allow delegates working in this sector an unparalleled opportunity to discuss sustainable development and its relevance to the industry.

Jan Bebbington, Professor of Accountancy and Conference Organiser said: "I am delighted that Jim Wallace is able to deliver the keynote address at this our third annual conference. His presence gives a great boost to the debate around sustainable development. Achieving moves towards sustainable development will take more than aspiration; the range of experience and expertise of speakers at this year's speakers event will hopefully lead the way in how the oil and gas industry can effectively implement sustainable development."

Over 40 delegates will hear the Minister speak about the relevance of sustainable development and hear how the Scottish Executive is seeking to put the process at the heart of government. Mr Wallace will highlight the importance of such an approach for all organisations, not just those in the oil and gas sector.

Any surplus proceeds from the Conference will be used to assist Sustainable Development. Last year's surplus (£3,700) was donated to the The Big Issue Scotland and the University of Aberdeen Development Trust (to support students studying Sustainable Development).
