Parents' survival guide to University

The University of Aberdeen recognises that going to University is a life changing experience and can be daunting not only for students but also for parents. The University is set to host a series of six parents' information evenings throughout Scotland beginning in Edinburgh on February 17. These events will provide parents with a valuable opportunity to receive information on various aspects of university life, as well as giving them a chance to air any questions about their sons or daughters leaving home and entering higher education.

The first of the six events will take place in Edinburgh at the International Conference Centre. At each event, refreshments will be served from 6.30pm and the presentations will commence at 7.00pm. Last year's parents' evenings attracted more than 1,000 guests who attended the events in Perth, Inverness, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The evenings will be introduced by Professor Dominic Houlihan, Vice Principal (Research and Commercialisation) who will provide an overview of the University, followed by specific presentations on important aspects of university life such as finance, accommodation, the admissions process and student support. In addition, the events provide an opportunity for prospective parents to hear from an existing student to get an honest overview of the realities of university life.

Clare Gadie, Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions said: "The transition from school to university can be daunting for parents as well as new students. We received extremely positive feedback from parents last year who were grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the transition from school to university for their children."

The events are only open to the parents of students who have applied to Aberdeen for September 2004 entry, however anyone requiring further information and/or to book a place at any of the parents' evenings should contact the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office, on (01224) 272090, or email: sras@abdn.ac.uk
