No two children are the same. No two days are the same. Teaching is like no other job. The University of Aberdeen is encouraging anyone with an interest in a career that genuinely makes a difference to attend an Information Evening next week (Monday, February 23 6 -8pm) at King's College Centre. The evening will focus on Postgraduate Certificate in Education, or PGCE (S), which aims to prepare students as new secondary school teachers in just one year of study.

The evenings will be introduced by Programme Directory, Joe McDowall who will provide an overview of the why and how's of becoming a teacher, followed by Helen Alba on her own experience as a student teacher and Simon Fogiel on what it is like as a probationer teacher. In addition, Noel Hughson, Education Officer for Aberdeen City Council will also advise on the induction year and employment prospects.

Joe McDowall, Programme Director PGCE (S) said: "The programme offers a good blend of professional practice and reflective study. It introduces student teachers to the challenges and rewards of the teaching profession within a supportive framework. "

The PGCE (S) offered by the University is a one year (36 week) full-time course and is the way to complete the Initial Teacher Education Year. Top priority subjects are: English, French; Gaelic; German; Home Economics; Mathematics; Physics and Technological Education. Other priority subjects are Chemistry; Computing; Drama; Geography and Religious Education. The opportunities for job and promotion prospects in these subjects should therefore be good. Teachers in Scotland have recently entered into a national agreement enhancing both teachers' salaries and professionalism.
