University of Aberdeen opens its doors to nursery children

Local nursery children have been invited along to some very special events being held at the University of Aberdeen to celebrate National Science Week, 2004. Over 250 pre-schoolers will be visiting the University of Aberdeen Natural History Centre to take part in Rainbow Tots, a series of specially designed activities to introduce children to the world of science, during the week beginning Monday 1.

During the 90-minute visits, the children will take part in activities based on the theme of colour. The activities are aimed at introducing the three disciplines of science - biology, chemistry and physics. Lots of fun things have been planned. The children will explore the biology of colour by looking for things growing in the Cruickshank Botanic Garden, do a fun chemistry experiment with milk and exploding colours and also look at the physics of light and rainbows by making some huge super-bubbles!

Mandy Tulloch, Development Co-ordinator, said: "National Science Week is organised by the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BA) with thousands of fantastic events taking place throughout March. Few activities cater for the youngest of children so we thought we would contact local nurseries to find out if they were interested in coming along - and we were inundated with requests.

"We will be introducing the children to the world of science through play. They'll find out what science is whilst learning more about the world around them as well as generally having fun - it's going to be great!"
