One of Britain's leading experts in law and ethics in medicine is addressing a gathering at the University of

Aberdeen tomorrow (Thursday, May 6).

Professor Sheila McLean is speaking at the Ethico-Legal Governance in Healthcare seminar organised by the University's Esslemont Group - a women's network group within the College of Life Sciences and Medicine.

Professor McLean is the International Bar Association Chair of Law and Ethics in Medicine and Director of the Institute of Law and Ethics in Medicine at Glasgow University. She has also acted as a consultant to the World Health Organisation and the Council of Europe and belongs to a number of UK Government committees.

Professor McLean will also present prizes to the winners of an essay competition which asked staff and students to identify a contemporary female role model in science or medicine and explain how she provides a positive impact on women in science today.

Essays have been judged by Dr Andrew Walker, Editorial Manager of Cancer Communications Ltd and Dr Sabine Kleinert, Medical Executive Editor of The Lancet.

Dr Helen Galley, Convener of the Esslemont Group, said : "This is the first Spring seminar to be organised by our group and I hope it's the first of many events which are designed to raise the profile of women in science in Scotland."

The one-day seminar is being held at the University's Institute of Medical Sciences in the level 7 conference room at 2pm.
