University travels the world for Museums Month

Explorers of all ages are being urged to head along to the University of Aberdeen to help celebrate Museums and Galleries Month.

Both the University's museums - Marischal Museum and the Zoology Museum - are open to the public and feature exhibits collected from all over the world.

Museums and Galleries Month - which is an annual national event organised by the Campaign for Museums - aims to encourage people to get out and visit a nearby museum or gallery. This year it has travel as its theme and thousands of events are taking place across Britain.

Neil Curtis, Senior Curator at Marischal Museum, said: "From ancient Egyptian mummies to boomerangs from Australia, the museum's collections are the result of the travels of many people from all over the world, with some amazing stories.

"There is even a kayak from Greenland which was found near Belhelvie 300 years ago with an Inuit man on board. Visit the museum this month and find out about some of the travel stories in the collection."

Mandy Tulloch, Development Co-ordinator at the University's Natural History Centre, added: "May is a great month to visit a museum! From a huge elephant skeleton to the tiniest hummingbird, the Zoology Museum holds wonderful animals collected on travels from all over the world.

"The Natural History Centre itself has loads of things for people to touch - from hippos' teeth to snake skins and live beasties. It's a great place to visit after school one day."

Admission is free to both museums. Marischal Museum is open Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm and on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. The Natural History Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
