Pupils from schools across the north of Scotland will be attending a prize-giving ceremony next week (Monday, June 7) as part of an annual maths competition being hosted by the University of Aberdeen.

Around 60 award winners from 20 secondary schools across the north of Scotland will attend the Prize Day, accompanied by teachers and parents.

The Prize Day for the North Section of the Mathematical Challenge Competition will be held in Lecture Room 1 of the Meston Building.

Attending the event will be prize-winners from the Western Isles, Highland, Moray, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City schools.

The competition has been running for the past 25 years. There are three sections: Junior (for S1 and S2), Middle (for S3 and S4) and Senior (for S5 and S6) and Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates are awarded to pupils who have scored highly on two sets of problems issued throughout the year.

In addition to the award ceremony on June 7, the participants will take part in a workshop on the day, being led by Dr Colin Maclachlan, Reader, School of Physical Sciences at the University, and Local Organiser for the Competition, in which they will be investigating unusual tiling problems.

Dr Maclachlan said: "I am looking forward once again to welcoming the award winners, their teachers and parents, to this Prize Day for the North Section of the Mathematical Challenge Competition. The competition emphasises sound mathematical reasoning and the award winners have clearly demonstrated their ability at this. The workshop should give them something new to think about and I hope that the pupils enjoy their day as they are truly worthy of their awards.

"This is an annual competition which we have been involved in for the last 25 years and I hope that the competition continues for years to come."
