A showcasing event to celebrate Transport Research at the University of Aberdeen and other Scottish universities, and to mark the award of an Honorary Chair in Transport to Moir Lockhead, OBE, is to be held tomorrow evening (Wednesday, June 9) at the University of Aberdeen.

Mr Lockhead is Chief Executive of FirstGroup plc, the biggest surface transport operator in the UK, with its headquarters in Aberdeen.

The Honorary Chair award reflects the links between Mr Lockhead and the research being undertaken by the Transport Group in Geography and Environment, part of the University's College of Physical Sciences.

The Transport Group, led by Professor John Farrington, includes experts on rail privatisation, rural transport and accessibility, transport policy, environmental impact, and economic development. They will be joined at the evening event by colleagues from various Scottish universities including the Robert Gordon University, Glasgow, and Napier universities.

Professor Albert Rodger, Head of the College of Physical Sciences is looking forward to the evening event. He said: "I am delighted that Moir Lockhead is receiving an Honorary Professorship from the University of Aberdeen. This deserved award is in recognition of Moir's significant contribution to innovation and leading practice in transport management and operation, and of his links with the research being undertaken on transport in the University.

"The inaugural lecture and showcasing transport research in Aberdeen event is a great opportunity to meet with colleagues undertaking transport research both here at Aberdeen as well as in universities across Scotland."

Mr Lockhead said: "This is a very proud moment for me. I am very honoured to receive this Honorary Professorship from the University of Aberdeen."

During the evening events, experts will review their work on sustainable transport, rural accessibility, and transport and devolution.
