Science is on the agenda for North-east pupils

An information seminar for local teachers, education advisers and interested academic staff on an initiative designed to help sixth year secondary school pupils with their studies is to be hosted by the University of Aberdeen tomorrow (Thursday, September 2).

The S6 Enhancement Unit was set up at the end of 2002 as part of the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Aberdeen, with the principal aim of supporting sixth year pupils studying Advanced Highers. The seminar will focus on providing information on the activities available in Science, with a range of individual activities and events being organised for sixth year pupils studying subjects in this area.

The information seminar is intended to raise awareness of the S6 Enhancement Unit generally and update schools on forthcoming events and activities, as well as reflecting on the successful programme run during 2003/04.

Julie McAndrews, Director of Wider Access Policy at the University and Professor Steve Logan, Senior Vice Principal at the University will open the afternoon seminar, and representatives from local schools and the Robert Gordon University will also give presentations at the event.

It is expected that over 70 delegates will attend the seminar with more than 45 local teachers, headteachers and education advisers will join a variety of University colleagues. Maggie Eggeling, S6 Enhancement Project Officer, said: “We are very glad to be able to continue and expand the activities of the S6 Enhancement Unit this year. I am delighted that the University of Aberdeen is able to help so many school pupils with their careers and we are looking forward to welcoming the pupils and staff. I hope that we will be able to develop activities for other curricular areas in addition to Science for the forthcoming year.”
