Aberdeen student scoops prestigious Physics prize

An innovative idea has secured an Aberdeen Physics student a prestigious award.

Nicholas Smart, who is currently studying for a BSc in Physics at the University of Aberdeen, scooped the award for the best entry by an undergraduate in the Thales Scottish Technology Prize.

Created by Thales UK and Scottish Enterprise, the Thales Scottish Technology Prize called for entrants to submit innovative proposals for laser technology and applications.

Launched in June this year the competition was open to all students and staff attending Scottish universities with the aim of underlining Scotland's global and historical reputation as a centre for excellence in engineering.

Nicholas was presented with a cash prize of £1000 for his entry, which detailed an idea for a co-ordinated positioning and reconnaissance system using laser, at an awards ceremony held at Thales UK's Glasgow headquarters on 11 December.

Professor John Watson from the University of Aberdeen's School of Engineering said: "The Thales Scottish Technology prize was a unique opportunity for University of Aberdeen students – in particular those attending the Level 4 course on Optical Engineering/Applied Optics – to showcase their knowledge and ability within the area of laser technology.

"I am delighted to see Nicholas selected as the winner of the undergraduate prize, which is a testament to the strong calibre of highly talented and enterprising students being produced by the University."
