Fitness festival for over 60s comes to Aberdeen

More than 90 over 60 year olds from across Scotland will be sampling all sorts of physical activities today at a special action packed festival for the more mature.

The Active Age Festival – a fun filled celebration of physical activity - is taking place at the University of Aberdeen which already has its own over 60s programme called The Evergreens comprising exercise classes, aqua fit, pilates, swimming lessons and a cardiac rehabilitation class.

The majority of those attending today's Festival are people who already attend health and fitness 60 plus programmes like The Evergreens that are held at universities across the country.

Organised by the Scottish Universities Physical Activity Committee, today's Festival will kick off with an introduction and welcome from Evening Express columnist Moreen Simpson.

Visitors will then be invited to take part in a mass participation group exercise – a gentle aerobic session to music.

After lunch participants can then choose to take a walk around the campus or try out Tai Chi, badminton, table tennis or indoor curling.

The day – which will also feature talks about walking and alternative therapies - will finish with a dance taster session featuring ceilidh, funk and broadway boogie.

Jackie Davidson is Chair of the Scottish Universities Sport Physical Activity Committee and a member of the Sports Development Team at the University of Aberdeen. She said: "This is the third Active Age Festival and the first time it has come to Aberdeen and we are delighted to welcome so many people to what promises to be a really fun event."

Filippo Antoniazzi, who is Director of Sport at The Robert Gordon University and Chair of Scottish Universities Sport, added: "It's fabulous that the Active Age Festival has come to Aberdeen, highlighting the work we do with this age group across lots of institutions in Scotland. We believe it's important that universities reach out to communities and using sport and physical activity is a great way to do this."
