New science qualification launched for distance learning students

The University of Aberdeen has launched a new qualification in science for distance learning students.

The Diploma in Science may be undertaken on a part time basis through the Flexible Science Programme.

Designed for those unable to study full time due to work, money or family commitments, the programme further expands the University's provision of distance learning courses.

Dr Peter Murray, Director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, said: "Providing opportunities to those who cannot commit to full time study is a core objective of the University of Aberdeen and the new Diploma in Science further enhances the portfolio of programmes which we offer to distance learning students. "

The Diploma in Science is an online version of current on-campus undergraduate science courses.  Students undertaking the Diploma will be able to access materials and complete work via web pages and additionally will be offered the opportunity to attend lectures, tutorials and practicals, if they wish to do so.

Successful completion of the programme, which will receive its first intake of students in September this year, will allow direct admission to years 2 or 3 of the full time or part time Bachelor of Science .

Dr Sally Middleton, Programme Co-ordinator said: "From young mothers through to retired professionals or those working within the oil and gas industry, the body of students studying through distance learning courses is diverse.   We recognise the need to meet the requirements of these students and the flexibility of distance learning programmes allows a balance between studies and personal commitments.  Students can also choose to blend online studies with on campus attendance, should they wish to do so, ensuring that they are benefiting from the study situation which best suits their own schedule."
