Kids go bananas at Duthie Park

Free bananas are up for grabs every morning this week to the first 50 kids attending the University of Aberdeen Natural History Centre’s summer project Planet Plant – free fun packed sessions being held at the David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park.

The Scottish Co-op is providing the free Fairtrade fruit to youngsters attending the activities.

Over the next three weeks hundreds of kids are expected to go along to Planet Plant – a series of entertaining and interactive exhibits and events running Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm which explain more about plants that provide us with food.

This opening week Food Story, from today until July 25, begins with a look at the food our ancestors ate and the kind of produce we eat now.

This afternoon a giant floor puzzle will be used to help kids learn more about food miles – or how far our food travels to get to our plates.

Marie Fish, Education Officer at the Natural History Centre, said: "Planet Plant is a great opportunity for kids to have fun and also find out more about the important plants on our planet that are keeping us alive!

"Over the next three weeks we are staging a wide range of interactive activities that will change each week. This week we'll be sending our young visitors on exotic food trail and they can also make a memento to take home.

"Planet Plant is free and open to all schoolchildren who must be accompanied by an adult."
