Pupils given helping hand with French

A distinctly French atmosphere is set to descend on the University of Aberdeen this week as over 300 pupils from Aberdeen city and shire primary schools enjoy an event aiming to develop their Gallic linguistics skills.

School children from Kincorth, Northfield, St Machar, Torry and Peterhead Academies will attend the fifth annual Primary 7 French Day which runs from Monday 23 – Friday 27 June.

The event will see the children take part in activities designed to support their transition from learning French in primary to secondary school.  From songs sung and stories told in French to a Gallic version of Bingo, a host of activities will take place as part of the occasion aiming to engage the children with the subject and prepare them for the next level of their studies.

The French Day has been organised as part of the University's aim 4 uni initiative which prepares school pupils for university education.

Event organiser Joe Whimster, aim 4 uni Project Officer, University of Aberdeen said: "The Primary 7 French Days are part of a range of events that the University of Aberdeen's aim 4 uni scheme supports for young people in schools.  This is the fifth year that the event has been run at the University and it is proving to be an increasingly popular choice of revision activity for many of the local schools.

"The aim is to build on the French which the primary school children have already developed including numbers, and basic greetings. The teaching staff who are conducting the sessions include native speakers of French, as well as students studying for a degree in French at the University of Aberdeen.

"While the main aim of the event is to improve confidence and ability in the study of the language, the pupils will also gain the opportunity to experience a taste of the University environment, as the events take place across the King's College Campus."
